- 1995: Illinois Audobon Council joined the RACE & Sierra Club lawsuit against the Amended Forest Plan; lawsuit stops Bell Smith Springs, Hayes-Bay, and Quarrel Creek timber sales.
- 1994: RACE and Sierra Club filed lawsuit against Shawnee Amended Forest Plan. RACE sponsored second HOPE conference. Injunction against BellSmith Springs logging. Smokey resigned from FS at a protest event and became an honorable member of several environmental groups.
- 1993: Lawsuits filed against Bell Smith Springs and Burner Hill logging. Race sponsored first HOPE conference. RACE joined coalition to stoplogging on Land Between the Lakes in Kentucky and Tennessee.
- 1992: RACE and others filed appeals on amended Forest Plan. RACE members planted native hardwoods in Fairview area. FSdecidedtolog over3000 acres of pines around Bell Smith Springs, calling it "ecological restoration."
- 1991: RACE hosted first Heartwood conference. Entire Illinois Congressional delegation asked FS to hold off logging on Shawnee due to money l oss. Fairview lawsuit lost in Appeals Court. Logging began in spite of massive protests and intense public outcry. RACE submitted detailed comments on Draft Amended Forest Plan; was praised in resolution from Illinois General Assembly; won award from Renew America
- 1990: Fairview Timber Sale lawsuit filed; after temporary injunction Court allowed sale to go ahead; massive protests got national attention. Incineration of contaminated soils authorized at Crab Orchard refuge. LWD incineratorin Calvert City, Ky. hadfinal operating permit denied, got injunction to stay open.
- 1989: First lawsuit filedin federal court, challenged the TownHall Timber Sale. Five S. Illinois county boards passed resolutions opposing clearcutting on Shawnee.
- 1988: ACE expanded to form Regional Association of Concerned Environmentalists (RACE). Race efforts lead to cancellation of Cave Valley Timber Sale. RACE and other groups joined GreenPeace ship, Beluga, at Calvert City, Kentucky chemical complex.
- 1987: All 8 pending timber sales on the Shawnee were withdrawnin response to appeals by ACE and other citizens.
- 1985 to Present: Association of Concerned Environmentalists (ACE) formed by citizens from Pope Co. area; fought environmentallydamaging Forest Service (FS) management practices on Shawnee National Forest (SNF); appealed 1st SNF Management Plan in 1988; joined other groups to fight regional chemical polluters.
